mySTORY

Like many, my journey with food and body image has been deeply personal.

Growing up in Los Angeles, where appearance was emphasized, I felt a strong desire to fit in. This led to struggles with an eating disorder, experiences with weight loss programs, and encounters with less than supportive dietitians. It was a journey filled with feelings of isolation, embarrassment, and a deep-rooted belief that my worth was tied to my physical appearance. My turning point came during grad school when I discovered Intuitive Eating, realizing there were tools and support for what I had faced as a child and adult. My experiences, particularly working in eating disorder treatment, have fueled my compassion and desire to provide care that helps clients break free from guilt, shame, and self-hatred. In my practice, I strive to offer this supportive, compassionate care, guiding others towards a sense of freedom and well-being.

Devon is very passionate about helping others heal their relationship with food, body and movement. And in her free time she really loves spending time with her dog Daisy, kickboxing, finding new restaurants in LA, spending time with family and friends. Some fun facts: Devon lived abroad for 6 years teaching english and loves to travel, her favorite ice cream flavor is coffee chip, she loves nachos and the movie Clue.

Approach to nutrition

Some may ask what a non-diet dietitian actually is. My approach to nutrition and our work together is one that focuses on the individual’s relationship and behaviors with food, movement and body rather than anything external be it a number on the scale or kcal. My practice is informed by the principles of intuitive eating and health at every size. I center each client and their experience rather than come in with a one-size fits all agenda. I will not put you on a diet or give you a one size fits all agenda or grocery list. While there is no meal plan I work collaboratively to help provide balance and structure with meal and snack ideas. Within this structure we explore the noise, beliefs, fears that get in the way of nourishment. Using tools of mindfulness, embodiment and gentle nutrition we work on quieting the noise and fear around food to connect and trust and then listen to your own body’s needs. We work on decreasing shame and guilt around food so that you can eat in a way that is free from restrictive and chaotic cycles around food. I want to help empower clients to feel safe and capable in their bodies and around food. My job is to help guide you to a peaceful relationship with food and body never to tell you what to do. Using gentle nutrition I help with balance and structure around food that is free of guilt and judgment. I help you recognize the belief system put in place from diet culture that is affecting relationships and behaviors with food. I help with using mindfulness to slow down and listen to one’s body to feel comfortable in seeking both satisfaction and satiety……

My Story

I became interested in nutrition probably in high school. As a child born in the 80s and raised in the 90s I was very much aware of dieting and the pressure to look a certain way. My siblings were 10 and 12 years older than me so I was exposed to adolescent talk about body image and diets when I was way too young to be aware of these things. I grew up in a very small town within LA where appearance and fitting in was important. I remember feeling like I didn’t look the part and didn’t fit in in a lot of ways. I struggled with an eating disorder in junior high and got treatment from a medical professional that never really recommended a therapist or dietitian. So my weight was restored and then we didn’t really talk about it. I struggled a lot and nobody knew. In the name of relapse prevention my parents tried to support my “healthy pursuit of weight loss” by sending me to weight watchers and a nutritionist who told me I would “be perfect if I was 10 lbs lighter.” Seriously, who says that to a 16 yo or anyone for that matter? I struggled in high school thinking I was not good enough and  nobody liked me. I went to college and relapsed eventually. I came home and my treatment was somewhat the same. I weight restored and although I was struggling we didn’t talk about it. I ate but felt out of control, I went to the gym a lot and felt out of control. I was functioning but was miserable and felt that my looks were the most important and worst thing about me. It took me years to make peace with food. I really wish I had had a non diet dietitian to help support me with my relationship to food and body and self. When I left to live abroad I got some distance from our cultural norms around food and body and began to eat and live in a very flexible way. I found Intuitive Eating in grad school after I thought I had been recovered for so long. And then I realized there were tools and support around all of the things I had struggled with as a kid and adult. I worked in eating disorder treatment and felt so much compassion for the patients and their pain. I knew that I wanted to help support people feel better and more free. And now in my practice I aim to provide supportive and compassionate care to help my clients get to a place where they feel free of guilt and shame and self hatred.

You were born to trust your body.

Our dieting journey can be dehumanizing, isolating, and it just doesn’t work for a lot of people. I understand because I’ve been there. You’re tired of feeling the shame, anxiety, guilt, and failure that comes with diet culture.

According to a 2006 global study, two thirds of women ages 15 to 60 avoid the basic activities of life because they feel bad about how they look. This includes meeting friends, exercising, voicing an opinion, going to school & work, dating, or even seeking medical help. You deserve to feel more empowered.
